What is your favorite part of being a wedding planner?

My favorite part of being a planner is being a resource for my clients. Most of the brides and grooms I work with are getting married for the first time and their only knowledge of the process comes from friends’ weddings and what they see on Pinterest, and they don’t know what they don’t know! I love getting to share my knowledge and experience to help them make informed planning decisions that match their tastes, needs and budgets.

What’s the one piece of advice you share with every bride?

Be true to yourself and do what you want – not what wedding blogs tells you you should want or what you see in your friends’ weddings! I have so many brides ask me, “Is this normal?” or “What do brides usually do?” or “What’s most common?” But you don’t really want what’s most common, do you? You don’t want guests to leave saying, “Wow, that looked just like a wedding I saw on Pinterest”; you want them to leave saying, “Wow, that was so THEM!” When you go with your gut and make choices that reflect you and your fiancé and your own unique love story, your day is going to be incredibly special.

Any tips for selecting the right theme or color palette for your wedding day?

I recommend first looking at the season of your wedding and then choosing a range of two to four colors that complement each other, fit the season, and look good on your bridesmaids. These can be shades of the same color (ranges of corals or pinks always look beautiful in summer) or colors that just look beautiful and rich together (a mix of burgundy, navy, and emerald is a showstopper in winter). Also, think about the flowers that will be available in your color! I picked sage green as my wedding color but didn’t want all greenery, so I added in a range of peach shades to brighten things up and add some variety in the florals. Your florist will be able to help you figure out what might be most beautiful on your wedding day, and that can be a great first step!

What is one thing you wish brides knew about wedding planners?

How necessary we are! My planner friends and I have had so many brides inquire with us early in the planning process, see our planning fees, decide to do things themselves instead, and end up frantically emailing a month out from the wedding asking for help. There is SO much work that goes into planning and coordinating a wedding, and the earlier you hire a planner, the more they can help you – not just with the details, but also with budget allocation and advice on vendors who fit your taste! Planning services may not be cheap, but you can’t put a price on the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have someone in your corner whose sole job is to make sure that your wedding day is everything you’ve dreamed of.

Any advice on keeping the wedding day running smoothly and on schedule?

It’s definitely easier said than done, but relax and stay flexible! By the time you get to your wedding day, you’ll have spent months – if not years – planning for it, and it’ll fly by in what feels like minutes. Don’t sweat the small things. Trust your vendor team to do their best work for you. And, most of all, try to stay in the moment and enjoy the day. After all your hard work planning it, you deserve to just have fun and celebrate!
