Although Natalie and Matt were both Omaha natives and shared a number of mutual friends, their paths never crossed until sophomore year of college. They met at a tailgate party at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. They went on a few casual dates but weren’t looking for a serious relationship. Towards the end of their junior year Natalie saw Matt at a party and sparks flew. They reconnected and became inseparable.

Matt and Natalie were living in Dallas and Matt made dinner reservations and planned a bar-crawl outing with their friends. He said it was to celebrate his recent promotion, but it was secretly the night he would propose. While waiting for the valet after dinner Matt suggested taking a short walk to a section of lit Christmas trees. Two women were waiting with cameras and captured his proposal. They headed back to let their dog out before meeting their friends and found more than twenty of their closest friends for a surprise engagement party.
