Let’s be honest. Wedding dress codes can feel like a language all their own. One invitation says “black tie optional,” another says “garden party,” and suddenly you’re standing in front of your closet wondering if your favorite dress is too casual or too formal.
We’re here to make it easy. Whether you’re attending a formal ballroom reception, a romantic vineyard wedding, or a laid-back outdoor celebration, this guide breaks down the most common wedding guest dress codes and exactly what they mean.

White Tie
The most formal wedding dress code you’ll encounter. Think grand ballrooms, luxury venues, and an elevated guest experience.
For Him: A tuxedo with tails, a formal white shirt, a white bow tie, and polished dress shoes.
For Her: A floor-length gown, elegant jewelry, and sophisticated accessories.
Black Tie
A timeless, elevated dress code that remains a popular choice for formal evening weddings.
For Him: A classic tuxedo with a black bow tie and formal dress shoes.
For Her: A floor-length gown or an exceptionally formal evening dress. Statement accessories are welcome.
Black Tie Optional
Formal, but with a little flexibility.
For Him: A tuxedo is encouraged but not required. A dark suit and tie work beautifully.
For Her: A floor-length gown, a chic midi dress, or a sophisticated cocktail dress.
Cocktail Attire
One of the most common wedding dress codes and one of our favorites.
For Him: A suit or sport coat paired with dress pants and polished shoes.
For Her: A cocktail dress, dressy midi dress, elevated jumpsuit, or stylish matching set.
Dressy Casual
Relaxed, polished, and perfect for daytime celebrations.
For Him: Dress pants or chinos paired with a button-down shirt.
For Her: Sundresses, floral midis, jumpsuits, or other elevated daytime looks.
Beach or Destination Attire
Lightweight fabrics and breathable silhouettes are key.
For Him: Linen pants, lightweight trousers, and breathable button-down shirts.
For Her: Flowy dresses, colorful prints, and comfortable footwear suitable for sand or outdoor venues.
What Not to Wear
No matter the dress code, there are a few wedding guest fashion rules that never go out of style:
- Avoid wearing white or ivory.
- Skip anything overly revealing.
- Don’t try to match the bridal party.
- Leave athletic wear, distressed denim, and flip-flops at home.
The Texas Question: Are Boots and Jeans Ever Okay?
In true Texas fashion, boots can absolutely be wedding appropriate. Dressy western boots often pair beautifully with Cocktail, Dressy Casual, and Casual attire.
Jeans should be reserved for weddings that explicitly lean casual. Think ranches, barn venues, and relaxed outdoor celebrations. When in doubt, opt for slacks instead.
No Dress Code Listed?
Let the venue be your guide.
A luxury hotel, country club, or formal event venue usually calls for Cocktail attire at minimum. Outdoor celebrations, wineries, and rustic venues may lean more Dressy Casual.
If the ceremony is taking place in a church or religious setting, it’s always best to choose something polished and respectful.
When you’re unsure, it’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. Trust us. You’ll never regret putting in a little extra effort for the couple’s big day.
